The Worship of Dead Radicals

By David Glenn Cox

For George Santos, the top of the hill has been reached. It’s all downhill from here. One white cap in a turbulent ocean of Republican political dysfunction. It seems so slow but now, so quick. Trump bouncing like a pinball from courtroom to courtroom. George is stomping his feet petulantly all the way out the door. But next year, his trial begins, and his future is dark. For George the good times are over.

Republican leadership is beyond questionable and the bench? George was the bench. A speaker of the house no one had ever heard before thirty days ago. It’s the culmination and a long time in coming. The Conservative movement is losing steam and becoming unpopular. Hurried along by the arrival of Donald Trump who hijacked the Republican Party.

It is all such a parallel line between George and Donald Trump. Both men on the same trajectory on different planes. Both full of bluster, bullshit, and bravado. Day by day, drip by drip, emails and confessions. Book deals and startling revelations. The Republican Party is struggling to raise money and that is not an accident, it’s a symptom of a dying political movement.

“Conservatism is the blind and fear-filled worship of dead radicals.” ― Mark Twain

The people who donate lots of money in Republican circles don’t feel like they are getting their money’s worth anymore. The big-money Republicans don’t want Donald Trump in the election. But they are powerless to stop him. Trump’s legal peccadillos are taking a toll on him. Many Republicans still think Trump is a great guy. But he is a great guy whose time has come and gone. The faithful might still genuflect to Trump, but will they vote for him?

Some just don’t want to admit that they are sick and tired of Trump. They don’t want to speak any evil about Trump, but secretly, they don’t want him to make home in the White House again. Weighted down by an amnesic feeling they want someone else. Unconsciously understanding the pandemonium that might swarm them and overwhelm them should Trump return to power.

Trump is becoming more and more erratic and gag orders are just boundaries for Trump to push. Trump is playing a double game. He’s running for election to escape prosecution and doesn’t give a damn what sort of collateral damage he does to the Republican party. The subliminal message Donald Trump is sending out to the Republican electorate; “Stay home.”

The congressional Republican message is muddled. A little bit here and a little bit there with no overarching theme other than repression. And all this mish mash called “Conservativism” Aided by pirates like Ron DeSantis, who based his campaign on book banning and homophobia. Because they lack any real theme, they each do whatever they want.

Marge Traitor Greene shout’s “Lair!” Matt Gaetz seeks to settle scores and let the chips fall where they may. Lauren “Beetlejuice” Bobert is being treated from bruises received from being touched by ten-foot poles. You can say whatever you want, they sky’s the limit. Ban books! Fire people! Attack Mickey Mouse!

A political party divided, muddled, and lost without any leadership. A political movement on its last legs and dying. Republican Presidential candidates becoming the flavor of the month before fading into the background. Replaced by this month’s new favorite. They don’t really like any of the candidates. None are captivating or exciting to the electorate. Because their movement is dying from atrophy.

The judge tells Trump “He’s not a king!” Ron DeSantis get embarrassed by Gavin Newson in their recent debate. Mike “who?” Johnson now claims he never read the racist homophobic and conspiracy filled book he wrote the forward for. Kevin McCarthy says, “Matt Gaetz belongs in jail.” No bad blood there, but that’s where we’re at. Marge Greene and easy Boebert get in a shouting match in the Capitol lady’s room over who wanted to impeach Joe Biden first.

The Party has outlived its generation and stands for nothing but fear. The Republican Party will remain strong in the confederacy but will fade and curl around edges to a regional party. Already Republican presidential candidates face an all or nothing campaign strategy. They must carry every state in the Midwest, lose Wisconsin or Pennsylvania and they’re done.

Democrats must take this opportunity to offer the electorate a vision of a better country. The TVA built over 200 dams and electrified the south for free. Tennessee was one of the poorest states in the union. FDR put people to work and built dam projects which improved the lives of everyone, and he did it for free. In 1948, the Democratic party begged Harry Truman to drop his desegregation plank and Truman refused.

John Kennedy put men on the moon and ignited the computer revolution that changed the entire world. The Republican Party is a spent force and very soon the ball will be in our court. What will do with it?

“If by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people-their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties-someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal”, then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.” ― John F. Kennedy
