A Milestone and a Millstone

By David Glenn Cox

Boom! Just when you thought it couldn’t get much worse or weirder for the Trump campaign. And just in time for Christmas! A big lump of coal from Krampus in somebody’s stocking, a sky turd falling from up on high directly into the punchbowl of Republican politics. Every debate over Donald Trump from now on will end with, “Well, there is still Colorado to consider.” Careful! Hot potato!

It’s not that Trump was ever worried about winning Colorado. But it is now enshrined in the courts of the state  that Donald Trump is an insurrectionist. A state Supreme court decision documented in black and white. If you have any questions or need to have it explained. Trump is disqualified in the Colorado primary election and the pressure builds and the onus falls on to the other states.

Going to the Supreme Court for political cover, yet again. A decision backing the court into an untenable position. The Supreme Court is riding on a crest of unfavorable opinions and unpopular decisions now finding themselves cornered. Defend Donald Trump and overturn the state court’s ruling by meddling and interfering in election matters, yet again. A thumb on the election scale is never a good look or a pretty picture.

Dump him, what do we have to lose?

For many inside the Republican Party, the Colorado decision is an early Christmas gift. Another reason to consider one of the many other really exciting Republican candidates who aren’t really all that exciting after all. But a chance to disengage from Donald Trump without pulling the trigger themselves. A hot potato with a double edge for Trump. For should the Supreme Courtiers suddenly decide to deactivate Trump and kick him to the curb, ala Richard Nixon by letting the ruling stand.

It would be a validation of the Colorado ruling on a national level. Why would the Trump loving court do such a thing? Because this is becoming a hostage situation for Republicans. Trump is careening out of control and his orbit becomes more extreme by the day. With the stroke of a pen or a silence by the court to hear the case. The Trump campaign would be effectively unplugged.  Run Free my children! You’re free! We’ve belled the cat! He can’t hurt you anymore!

A clean break, and the old boy will never see it coming! “Well gee Don, we’d like to support you but…you know.” They did it to Nixon, so they could do it to Trump too. After all, how much toothpaste is still left in that tube? What are the Republican calculations which could tip the scale? Maybe it’s just better now we start over and abandon the old boy to his fate.

“The time has come to talk of many things, of ships and strings and sealing wax of cabbages and kings.” For Trump this adds a whole new level of complexity. It’s easy to cry about a single prosecutor; it’s harder to cry about a whole state court system or multiple states. Of course, that won’t stop Trump from squalling about it. But he will now have to criticize entire states. “Do you know what’s wrong with your house?” And if the Supreme Court abandons Trump, kicking him to the curb? Checkmate, it’s over.

It is also possible between now and then that other states could follow suit. Making Trump’s already limited electoral chances a crazy quilt patchwork of here and there. Making Trump unelectable in fact as well as in theory. If Trump can’t run in the Colorado primary, he won’t be on the ballot in November. The cultists will still be able to write in Trump’s name but that does require some extra effort.

Besides, it’s official now. Trump is unfit for office.

Ever so slowly, the Coup picture comes into focus. Mark Meadows has swung a plea deal and will sing on Donald Trump. Rudy Giuliani owes 148 million dollars for the lies he told while in the service of Donald Trump. Fox News writes checks for the lies they told with an astounding number of zeros in them. Trump attorneys plead guilty, and Trump’s children take the 5th Amendment. Ho hum, just another day at the office!

The die is cast and preordained, a solid right to the jaw staggering the champ.

In Texas, where madness has wings. Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick cries like a schoolgirl on Fox News and promises petty retribution.

“Seeing what happened in Colorado makes me think—except we believe in democracy in Texas—maybe we should take Joe Biden off the ballot in Texas for allowing eight million people to cross the border since he’s been president disrupting our state.”

I dunno, but why is the Texas Lt. Governor sounding off on a court case in another state? It’s somehow not democracy when the court rules against them. Naturally, they’d never really take Joe Biden off the ballot because they are so famously level headed in Texas. They believe in Democracy in Texas.

Just another case of “baby doesn’t get his way,” so he’s out to stomp everyone’s sand castle. “If you take Twump off da ballot for just cause. We’ll take Joe Biden off the ballot without cause! There! How do you like those apples? Because they believe in Democracy in Texas.

It is a milestone and a millstone. A high stakes gambit on which everything will depend. Donald Trump has been found guilty of insurrection. You can’t go back or retreat from that. The verdict is GUILTY! Guilty! Guilty!

To paraphrase Churchill, this is perhaps not the end of the beginning, but it is perhaps the beginning of the end.  A chance for the Republican Party to disengage and break cleanly, while leaving the dirty work to others. A chance for the Supreme Court to rid themselves of this orange meddling priest. Especially now, after he’s outlived his usefulness.

“Fame is a vapor, popularity is an accident, riches take wings, those who cheer today may curse tomorrow and only one thing endures – character.”  ― Harry Truman

A fine column as usual, King Friday, but it’s “…shoes — and ships — and sealing wax…”.

My thoughts go along the same pattern yours did regarding multiple states denying his name on their ballot. If nothing else, it makes a statement…….
