It Puts the Lotion on its Skin

By David Glenn Cox

Is anyone surprised? Are we lit yet? A cult which makes up their own poll numbers. By our own numbers and by a wide margin, we’re so fucking popular we can hardly stand it! All hail Big Brother! Isn’t he great? It becomes an exercise in human nature. Those who say the things which fit in with the swami’s message advance, while those throwing the rocks of reality are quickly dismissed.

It is ironic, yet correct, in its historical accuracy. Donald Trump says he wishes he had Generals like Hitler did. Odd, because Hitler was never pleased with his Generals. A pretty craven lot, all in all. Like Trump’s polls, the generals smiled and applauded every success and only objected to Hitler’s interference when things began to go wrong. Those who made a pattern of disagreeing with the Fuhrer were dismissed. Those who said, “Great Idea boss,” advanced.

Donald Trump wants to be a King. A sick twisted delusional King of the fools. Surrounded by craven yes men. “Yes, your majesty. Right away, your majesty! Large fries?” It boggles the (sane) mind trying to fathom what could be going on inside that orange continence. He’s an old, old man and the campaign strain must be tremendous.

Donald Trump cancels another personal appearance. Officially, cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. Unofficially, because the old boy is out of gas and sputtering badly. Because every time Mr. Trump gets a microphone in his hand and is not directed, bad things happen. Mr. Trump starts talking about Hannibal Lector. Fascinated by a cannibal and a serial killer, Adolf Hitler, and Arnold Palmer’s dick size. Sleep tight America!

These things which he says off hand are the circles going round in Mr. Trump’s mind. You might have warm memories of the Death Star’s destruction or some sport’s triumph. Mr. Trump daydreams about mad men and serial killers and probably shouldn’t be allowed out on the streets.

There is a rising undercurrent of suppressed Republican discontent. Enough discontent to make Ron DeSantis look like a front runner. There are far too many prominent Republicans denouncing Mr. Trump and endorsing Ms. Harris not to be representative of Republican voter sentiment at large. But in a cult, you can’t speak against Jehovah. You can still think what you like, but nodding and agreeing on command are required.

You can’t stand up against all your friends and family and publicly denounce Mr. Trump. It might be possible your friends and family would like to denounce Mr. Trump too! But such things aren’t to be talked about in polite families publicly. So, when the pollsters ask, they answer Trump. But will they actually get in the Buick and drive down to the elementary school? Stand in line and pull the lever if their heart really isn’t in it? What if it rains or the lines are too long?

Human nature says when the home team is winning the stands are always full. When the home team loses, great seats are still available! Early voting is breaking records across the country. It could be that early mail in voting is just gaining acceptance. But generally; when the turnout is heavy, it means good things for Democrats. A question pollsters never ask. “How likely are you to lie to this pollster?”

How likely are you as a Trump supporter to stay home and forget to vote? How likely are you to tell friends and family you support Trump, but are secretly growing sick of him? Is Donald Trump more popular with the public today than he was four years ago? Is the level of enthusiasm for Mr. Trump’s campaign the same or higher than four years ago? Because that level four years ago wasn’t damned near good enough to win any election.

The Trump campaign is a shadow of its former self. And in the heat of a supposed competitive election race, is cancelling interviews and appearances two weeks out before election day. That’s perfectly normal. That says good things about the campaign, doesn’t it? We’re so confident we’re cancelling major interviews!

The polls say this race is so close, but by cancelling events the Trump campaign is saying, it isn’t. But if you’re going to cancel only one appearance of this presidential campaign. This would probably be the one event you want to cancel. A healthcare town hall hosted by resident healthcare experts and newly minted Republicans Robert Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard.

Obviously, it isn’t safe to allow Mr. Trump to talk about healthcare. Add in RFK and Tulsi from outer space and you have a disaster, live on stage! Mr. Trump was supposed to welcome the new members into the faith. But without Mr. Trump’s appearance, who cares? Heckle & Jeckle’s meaningless ideas from the outfield! This was an event for the Republican Party. They are proud of their new members and wanted to showcase them while at the same time assisting Mr. Trump.

Healthcare is far too, too dangerous a subject to turn Mr. Trump loose on. He’s been formulating healthcare plans in his mind for years now like OJ was looking for a murderer. Too many facts and figures to remember. Trump likes Nazi Generals and serial killers! It puts the lotion on its skin.

Someday, after the election, someone will write a book about the disastrous Trump campaign of 2024. A campaign which managed to choose a worse VP nominee than Sarah Palin, that’s no small  accomplishment! Cat ladies and Hannibal Lector, dance parties. Swing and sway with mental decay!

I see it and you probably see it too. How many Republican voters also see it?

Normally, as if anything in this situation could be called normal. But normally, a candidate only gets two bites at the presidential apple. Trump now tries for a third bite, and it just isn’t going to happen. The headwinds against Mr. Trump are too strong. The abortion issue, Trump’s crimes, and January 6th. All personal issues for  Republican voters, all issues of conscience. And when Republican voters are troubled by the issues or by the candidate. What do they do? They stay home and ignore them. Nixon’s silent majority beat down and worn out.

“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us move forward with strong and active faith.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt
