Close your eyes and pretend you are in Germany in 1933. Now, open them and you are there! I’ll show you what I mean.

Duh McFly, the threats are real! Do you think he’s kidding perhaps? And just like in 33, those in harm’s way are beginning to flee. Florida’s anti-migrant laws and feared oppression have started an exodus from Dumb Time State. And now, Haitians in Springfield are scared and should be scared. Zealotry is a hallmark of fascism. It’s always okay to work late in the name of oppression. Wanna be Sheriff’s and small-town cops. “You just keep moving and don’t you come back until them peaches are ready, yeah hear?” See: The Grapes of Wrath.

Pathetic Neo Nazis march in American streets with swastika flags as onlooker’s gawk. But that is a key difference between Germans and Americans. American’s will not accept any ideology which forces them to dress up. See: Church Attendance. If I can’t wear a tee shirt and jeans, I’m not going. How about I just throw a white sheet on and praise Jesus? Americans are more into old fashioned thuggery requiring less strident and direct courage. Fire bombings and midnight beatings with cross burnings and lynchings. Those jack boots look mighty uncomfortable to me and it’s too damn hot to march. Let’s go to McDonalds and get something good to eat.

Soon it will be hard for some people to find a landlord as prevailing laws against such discrimination will be largely ignored. Papers please! Landlords don’t want their properties to be firebombed or broken up by police raids. They don’t want to be accused by the boys down at the Country Club of catering to “Them.” Hispanics in public positions will be expected to disappear or will be disappeared. Not by any government mandate, but by social pressure alone. You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

Human nature is a constant that never changes. The universe is made up of protons, neutrons, and morons. Americans are far too lazy to burn books. They would rather ban them from the start and save the matches and effort. Better to criticize a book no one has ever heard of before than to have to actually read the book. Americans might be willing to burn books, if they weren’t too lazy to find out what is actually in them.

“Oh, that hurts my eyes. I’ll just wait for Netflix to do a simple version without all those big words in it.” I see where Hollywood is about to release a new and “Improved” cinematic version of Homer’s epic “The Odyssey,” oh god, no! You know, most American schools have stopped teaching Greek Mythology. They didn’t want to open that Pandora’s Box or have their student’s fearing the sword of Damocles was overhead. You know, education! You hold the toothbrush like this, and then you move it up and down. And then, Jesus came down and touched George Washington’s shoulder. 2 + 2 equals five Winston!

When I was seventeen, I wrote a term paper titled, “Why Jefferson Davis was a War Criminal.” I was sent to the principal’s office. Where it was explained to me that such papers wouldn’t be tolerated at Jefferson Davis High School. And they didn’t find my attempt at humor very funny. But I wasn’t kidding, and there were no inaccuracies. Robert E. Lee went home, and Jeff Davis hid out and ran for the Canadian border wearing a dress. Why? Because he himself thought he was an indigent treasonous rebel who should be, and probably would be, promptly hung. But that’s just my opinion. You just can’t go telling some folks their baby is ugly.

Something tells me if you like vegetables you should probably plant you a garden. Vegetables could get expensive in the next year or two, along with meat and poultry processing. Hate is in and the devil’s having a picnic, and anyone can attend! Finally, an America we can all be equally ashamed of together. To lose all faith in Democracy rather Demo Crazy! To lose faith in the wisdom of my fellow Americans. At a time in history when the choices couldn’t have been any clearer. The mob chose Barabbas. And sent Jesus off to Golgotha without any qualms about it.

I guess that is why I find it so difficult to accept. I was raised to believe Americans would always do the right thing, eventually. But now the mob has spoken, and we must now quietly watch as a cloak of fear descends over the landscape.

The Germans had one damn good excuse. Der Fuhrer fooled them, but they only fell for it once. Americans on the other hand, have no such excuse.  The mad king ran on deportations, and he means to have them! If just, if only, as the symbol of the new oppression.  “To Deport and Serve!” Don’t get in the car with Deputy Dan. He’s not your friend! When they ask at school who your relatives are or who lives in your house. You tell them nobody, you have no relatives, understand?

Better not to say that. Better not to sing that. Better not to put that bumper sticker on your car. Better not to make films like that. Someone might report you. But I’m not Hispanic! “Where are you taking me?” It rhymes with tuba.
