“In Keeping Silent About Evil”

By David Glenn Cox

Strange as it might sound, many years ago one of my best friends in the wilds of Alabama was a Baptist preacher. Small town preachers leading small town congregations don’t get paid all that much, so we worked together. We were both big baseball players in our younger days. He was a star pitcher, and I was an average catcher. But it came to his attention through reliable sources. That one of the Deacons at his church was having an affair with another member’s wife.

He brought the issue to the Deacon’s meeting. By saying without naming names, that one of the Deacons had fallen out of step with the teachings of the lord. And that person needed to step forward and renounce his sin. Or step down as a Deacon or he was leaving that church as their preacher. He liked his job and preaching jobs didn’t grow on trees in small towns. But he told me that if he looked the other way. That man’s sin became his sin. He didn’t get any of the pleasure out of it and he only shared in the guilt and the consequences.

How could he in good conscience be the spiritual head of a bunch of bed hopping hypocrites? The Deacon did not step forward or seek spiritual forgiveness. So, my friend resigned as leader of the church offering only that there were spiritual divisions which they could not come to an agreement on. He was smart enough to know affairs like that, especially in a small town, often become common knowledge soon enough. And once it was revealed, his career would have been ruined. It was a little used word in this new dark age of ours called, Integrity!

Could you serve on a panel if you knew the other members were openly corrupt? Could you look the other way and pretend that everything was still on the up and up? Without their corruption becoming your corruption? Such is the case of our alleged Supreme Court. The headlines from the scandal may have faded, but Clearance Sale Thomas is still corrupt and still serves openly. Making the rest of the members nothing but play actors pretending to serve on an “honest” court.

The Supreme Court for generations has always served the whims of property and money. And has always worked to ground any radical desires of the people. So, Dred Scott was still another man’s property and separate, but unequal was good enough for them. And so, say all of us! So, it’s not like they had all that much credibility to lose to begin with. But one bad apple does indeed spoil the whole bunch. You might not be sipping champagne on a billionaire’s yacht. But you might as well be. Your vote is negated by a crooked freeloader.

There is no such thing as a little bit crooked. It might start out that way but cannot remain so. That one little blemish soon becomes a cancer which will eventually envelope the whole body. So, when a Supreme Court accedes to the wishes of an authoritarian dictator. They subvert not just the principles of law. They subvert and diminish themselves. Once they have given the dictators enough power and legal standing. The dictator no longer needs them anymore. They become ceremonial antiques throwing out the first pitch or hosting Grocery store grand openings. No longer needed for much of anything but as a big rubber stamp and their opinions rapidly becoming worthless.

Adolph Trump wins again in the court. Surprise, surprise. No longer can one Federal judge issue a nationwide injunction and Adolph smiles broadly. Now the Federal Court’s opinion means nothing! Every state and region for itself. (Federalism? What’s that?) If you wish to fight the power of big money you must now do it everywhere. The law in Idaho or California can be different from Federal law in Vermont or Mississippi. Why that just makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? The Supreme Court throwing a monkey wrench into the Federal courts. The law of the land only applies to this land right here, while across the street it could be different. Stripping the power of the courts to restrain the King. Throwing away 250 years of legal precedent on whim, just to make orange Adolph smile.

Now, You wait a minute, Dave. I think you’re being a just little bit harsh! Calling our President, Adolph is the worst kind of hyperbole. But am I?

In the kingdom of insects and the land of inbred corruption and ignorance. Floriduh Governor Ron DeSantis, AKA the Rodney Dangerfield of American politics. Proposes Alligator Alcatraz. Do you know what that is? It is a CONCENTRATION CAMP! Repeat after me, “It can’t happen here! It can’t happen here!” But it is happening here. And like all good CONCENTRATION CAMPS, it is to be located far from the public view. Never mind what goes on there! Mind your own business and move along OR ELSE!

Little Ronny short stack has a real penchant for violence and cruelty advocating for the death penalty, just so he could pull the switch himself. But he can’t get any respect living in the shadow of orange Adolph. So, he tries and tries to bolster his credentials by proposing ever more Fascist tendencies. “If you can’t beat them, exceed them!”

Alligator Alcatraz? Why, the name alone says it all, doesn’t it? If the inmates try to escape the alligators will eat them! And Alcatraz is famous as a harsh and brutal prison housing only the worst of the worst! Clever name, don’t you think? How about Auschwitz Arms or Dachau Depot? Just for immigrants being deported, but only just for immigrants for now.  (Can we build one for you?) In the original Nazi Concentration Camps the cruelty was often largely due to incompetence rather than any specific plan. But a small blemish cannot remain small.

Only in America do the well-intentioned protest CONCENTRATION CAMPS on the grounds of environmental concerns and concerns for an endangered species. “It will damage the Everglades! It’s the habitat for the Florida panther! I just don’t know what to say about people like that. These are the kind of people who would complain about the smoke from the crematorium chimneys. While ignoring the crime which was creating the smoke. IT’S A FUCKING CONCENTRATION CAMP! Its purpose is cruelty, and its goal is misery!

But I don’t live in Floriduh (Thank god!) But the sin still belongs to you and I. Pretending that we can’t see it or don’t know about it, doesn’t excuse us. Any more than it once excused Germans who claimed they didn’t know anything about the camps either.

“In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand-fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations.”  ― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn
