You Made Him Do it!

By David Glenn Cox

It is a story with all the earmarks of a story that eventually ends badly. I just can’t imagine this ending with Trump in a top hat shaking hands with the new president and then waving goodbye to the jubilant crowd. The little trolley is slipping and can’t quite make it to the top of the hill anymore. He’s just ranting now. Prattling on infinita to anyone brave enough to listen.

He begins to mumble about dictators. You can always tell what was being discussed at the last staff meeting by what Trump mumbles about. He must have seen or heard somewhere that he was called a dictator. The king was mumbling something about not being a dictator and then innocently, accidentally said, maybe that’s what the people want? “Maybe the people want a dictator.” Put on your sick and twisted goggles and headphones for best reception. And who do you suppose he has in mind to play the part of this rogue dictator we all secretly want?

Innocently and almost totally unaware of what he was saying publicly. Donald Trump just gave you the ten-cent tour through the madness of the inner sanctum. Welcome to my nightmare. Pull up a chair and set a spell! A mad king who is ready to justify everything simply by saying. You wanted me to do it! Secretly, you’d like me to be a dictator. Do you feel the crazy yet? The little voices inside of the inner space tell him. Whatever he does, he does because we secretly wanted him to do it. A man with multiple personalities, and we’re just one of them. He’s doing these things because we are making him do it. Room for one at the Bates Motel?

Back in the real world, they would call that a “startling admission.” A psychological tug-o-war taking place on the public balcony of Donald Trump’s mind. I’m not a dictator! I’m not! I’m not! But if I am a dictator. It’s because you made me do it. You wanted me to do it! You might not have come right out and said so, but you did! I think it! Ergo, you wanted it! I’m not the dictator…you are! A complete rejection of all responsibility, backstage at the dictatorship.

Come on, all you big strong Republicans, defend that! The king has lost his mind, and reality is pushing back hard, piercing his fantasy and putting on display our president. Mad as a hatter! He’s outlawing flag burning and one year in jail to anyone who burns a flag. It’s so 1979, so far out of date. Grandpa had a flashback, so it’s a year in the slammer for anyone who burns a flag like they used to do back forty or fifty years ago! Just whatever is rattling around in his craw becomes his next executive order material. The flag-burning cases are clear; it’s free speech. And just because the king doesn’t like it doesn’t mean he can change it.

Do You see? He’s not a dictator. He’s just a man with the power to do whatever he wants with the stroke of a pen and without ever asking anyone. It’s an awesome power and responsibility, and sometimes, I bet he wishes we wouldn’t force all that power on him. He takes credit for stopping wars which are still going on. Do you know what that means? Either there’s a wheel off of the little orange trolley or they are lying to him. Telling him just what he wants to hear.

In most places where Trump has used the military, the situation is currently worse than if Trump hadn’t used the military. The general who reported the bombing of Iran was less than the spectacular stunning success the king said it was, got fired. Your turn. What would you like to put in your report to the king? Do you want to give him some bad news? If you tell him good news, he probably won’t even remember it in twenty minutes or an hour or so. But if you tell him bad news, unemployment awaits.

It means they can’t control him. The ship sails, the seas storm and no one is at the helm. The wheel spins aimlessly to and fro. The king now wants to fire someone else on the Federal Reserve board. It just galls Trump that he can’t get his fingers on economic policy. Because secretly, he thinks we want him to take over the Federal Reserve. But Trump gaining control over economic policy would most likely result in bad things happening. The king lowers interest rates and ignites inflation. The king lowers interest rates, and nobody wants to buy our treasury bonds anymore.

But if he upsets the applecart at the Federal Reserve, there will be an international loss of confidence in American financial products. If you can’t trust the Bureau of Labor Statistics, who can you believe? If you can’t trust the Federal Reserve, who can you trust? If they had any control over the king, they would bury this issue quickly, before it bites them.

Messing with the Federal Reserve is like playing with kryptonite. It’s a third rail of American politics. You can spit out all of your little pronouncements and shit on the little people all you want. But if you start fucking around with the powers of the wealthy. They’ll send you on an open car ride through downtown Dallas. No, no, no! Don’t touch the Uber-wealthy!

The messaging from the White House is scattershot and jagged. Just whatever he happens to be thinking about at that moment. It has a real familiar ring to it. I did it because the people wanted me to do it. I know what the nation wants because I am the nation! I know what you want! The voices in my head are telling me to do that too! He was only doing what the people in Germany wanted! Because that’s what the people wanted him to do! It’s not his fault; it’s the people’s fault. “One people, one fuhrer, one Reich!”

“In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand-fold in the future. When we neither punish nor reproach evildoers, we are not simply protecting their trivial old age, we are thereby ripping the foundations of justice from beneath new generations.” ― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn
