That’s Almost News!

By David Glenn Cox

It’s a wonderful time to be alive, what with the world being upside down and fraught with dangerous perils and possibilities. Electronically, your ticket is taken to the inverted land. If it’s obviously bad news, just don’t talk about it, and it will be washed away in the news slurry in a few days. Always show a neutral bias on stories showing the administration in a poor light. Offer justifications and comparables or maybe mention Joe Biden. Smile for the camera while pretending the building’s not falling in.

It’s been a rough week these last twenty-four hours for the Trump team. Lucky for them, the media’s not paying attention. Two more tar and feather parties disguised as Republican town halls. Politicians being lambasted and threatened with death or personal injury. I’ve never seen anything like it before! Angry mobs and overflow crowds and the media just ignore it like it never happened.

Red faced angry Republicans in red ass Republican states. I sense an unpopularity disturbing the force! A whisper in the breeze with the scent of roasting pork in the air. If the Republicans intend on cheating to stay in power, they had better cheat good. The news media cheer and follow along intently, redistricting in Texas. It is displayed as an assertive and aggressive move when it’s the opposite. They’re toddlers fighting over a blanket and fearful there won’t be enough blanket left to go around. They’re fighting to save themselves! To carve out little Republican enclaves where they can go to ride out the storm.

On every issue, the administration is under water. Massively and insanely unpopular with the masses. They give the numbers but disassociated from any commentary and so don’t bother to remark on it. “Say, Bob, aren’t those the lowest presidential approval numbers in history?” Why yes, Kathy, they are. But there’s no need to go around talking about it like it’s news or something. Just let the slurry do its work!

It was a failure on all fronts…then the roof fell in. Trump’s tariffs, the king’s signature act, has been struck down and declared unconstitutional by the appeals court. It only throws everything into pandemonium. All of their work and bluster and nonsense turned into bumper cars crashing into each other aimlessly. Republican Joni (We all gotta die sometime) Ernst is out and won’t seek reelection. You’re going to see a lot of these decisions made in the coming months. Better to leave standing up than it is to leave beat up. These are people who read the mail and listen to their phone messages.

I have it on good authority that phone message listening is sort of a new fad in Washington. Everyone’s doing it! They know the answer is blowing in the wind, Bob. They just want to get out of the wind themselves. The public is in a foul mood, and the Republicans know it. The duality of knowing what is coming next and smiling while pretending it’s not. And a news media which ignores the story because the boss probably wouldn’t like it. Extra! Extra! “Presidential popularity at record lows! Heavy voter backlash expected!”

Now, with the king’s tariffs up in the air, they have nothing. They head into the midterm elections with nothing to run on but Donald Trump and his tax cuts for the rich. And Trump’s not all that popular per the official secrets act. Go to any Republican Town hall and watch what happens when they mention “The Big Beautiful Bill” It’s like shaking up an ant farm. They go crazy. I’ve never seen anything like this before.

In New York, the Socialist Candidate Zohran Mamdani is doing so well, the media has stopped talking about him entirely. The media had started by questioning and deprecating his beliefs and his program. But then people began to like what he said. So, the media turned him off like a light bulb. Who? Oh, is he still here? Just imagine what they’d say if he were losing?

The wheels are coming off and the media portrays it as “Everything is fine.” When clearly, it’s not. The media spent weeks building up the shakedown summit with Putin. The summit went badly. Probably worse than any peace summit in memory has ever gone. Then nothing. The media just loaded the van up and drove away. Never mind what actually happened, that’s not news. “Peace Summit Ends in Angry Confrontation! Two Sides No Longer Speaking!” It was a freaking diplomatic disaster. So, the administration and the media just pivot on to something else. Like fun house mirrors distorting the truth.

The Centers for Disease Control is imploding. Top people are leaving because authoritarian fascism has reared its ugly head and has come to town. You just bob your head up and down and say “Yes sir, while drooling ” to whatever we tell you to say. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. the human bowel obstruction, appoints his lackey to take over the agency. Then pens a personal letter to the remaining CDC employees. Explaining how he has faith in their work and values their opinions too! I just fired your boss for expressing her opinion, but I value yours!

Trump illegality fires a member of the Federal Reserve on the weakest of allegations. Almost no press on this illegal firing. But it is enough to spook Wall Street. It’s frightening to the monied crowd. The orange ape man is playing with financial hand grenades. And it almost rises to the level of news! An Iowa farmer laments losing their best soybean and pork customer because of you know who, and then saying mournfully, “and they’re never coming back.” That’s almost news.

Unprecedented times and unprecedented actions with unprecedented failures all ignored and looked around, looked over and overlooked. Like an episode of the Twilight Zone where the Titanic sinks every night, and the Hindenburg blows up every day and nobody really cares. Snapshots of a false reality presented on exhibition. Karoline Leavitt to Beaver is overwhelmed while making her daily excuses and resorts to sniping personal attacks. Because when in doubt, you change the subject.

Just ignore a dictator’s failures and his criminal attempts to illegally seize more power, that’s not news!

“Being in a minority, even in a minority of one, did not make you mad. There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad.” ― George Orwell
