I watched a film last night on Pluto TV entitled “Just Imagine.” It was a film from 1930, about what the world would be like in fifty years, in the far distant future of 1980. It was a kitschy, goofy little film with all the expected cliche’s. Flying cars, video telephones and food in pill form. But the main character embarked on the first flight to Mars.
It got me to thinking that’s why a South African conman can convince people today about colonizing Mars. There is such a long legacy of belief that Mars was once populated or habitable. Primitive scientists thought they saw canals on Mars. Proof of industry and they built up elaborate theories of a desperate water shortage. H.G Wells “War of the Worlds” reinforcing the idea Mars could be habitable. This “Just Imagine” film didn’t disappoint. These Martians wore weird semi jungle costumes and jumped around a lot. But the myth continues even today in films.
But in fact, Mars is not habitable, it is deadly. Anytime someone promotes colonizing Mars, watch your wallet. The atmosphere, what little there is, is toxic. There is no protection from the radiation coming from space. There is no water other microscopic amounts. At the poles is frozen nitrogen (dry ice). Any Martian colony would live underground, imprisoned in caves forever. Even if there were gold nuggets the size of basketballs scattered around, there is no reason to go. Just the uninformed legacy of literature and film.
But what of fifty years from today in 2076? In 1930, they could take a wide-eyed, optimistic look at the future. Today, where is such optimism to be found? Who sees a rosy future waiting over the next hill? Today, we live in a world of misidentification. I saw a video of John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas” With John singing. Only it was AI. You see? They call it AI, when what it was just a pseudonym, for fake. We have this wonderful technology to create things which never were and we call it good! When it’s not good, it’s fake, it’s a fraud. Someone using technology to capitalize on a dead person’s creative legacy.
Across the planet, the developed world is trying with all its might to hold back the surge of migrants. What an interesting word to call them. A much nicer term than the factually correct Economic Refugees. The poor and the destitute yearning to breathe free and eat every day. Capitalism as a system is failing. Here in the United Snakes, opportunity is dwindling and the middle class is dying. Wages are stagnant and opportunity is nil. In fifty years, what will the world look like? Outside of the developed world, there is only one product being made. Babies, more and more babies. Lots and lots of babies.
In sub-Saharan Africa, the birthrate is soaring while in the developed world it is stagnant or falling. How can we humanely hold back the tide? Because there just isn’t enough to go around. And with the rise of the billionaire class, there is even less. Go ahead, tell them. “Go home and die.” Go have ten babies and watch what happens next. Go back to Latin America and work in the sweatshops, making Walmart tee shirts. You only hear what they want you to hear. They call them migrants like they are pioneers in Conestoga wagons out to tame the new frontier. When what they actually are, are refugees escaping from failed states. Now fast forward fifty years.
As Mark Twain once said, “God created war to teach Americans geography.” It takes a plane crash or an earthquake or a tsunami to even get a mention in American media. The media could tell us about what is going on in the rest of the world, but they don’t want to tell you. Because you might not like it.
Don’t you know? Big Brother is increasing the chocolate ration, and someday everyone will have two cars in their garage. Prosperity is just around the corner! It is not just that Donald Trump is a liar. It’s that he’s a bad liar. He keeps telling us there is no inflation and you just won’t believe him. The answer, then, is simple. Change the media to reflect big brother’s pronouncements. I’ll show you how it works. There is a shitty beer on the market, so what do you do to improve sales? Make a better beer? Heck no! Change the can to something different and unique. Then make TV commercials showing it in the hands of affluent people. You want to be affluent too, don’t you? Well, maybe you’ll never be invited to join the country club. But you can drink the same beer.
The billionaires are buying up the media to keep the media from saying bad things about the billionaires. Hence the expression, “No news is good news!” for the billionaires. In Chinese newspapers are a lot of interesting stories about advancements in science, medicine and technology. But few stories about politics. In Saudi Arabia, the king will open a new kindergarten and dedicate a new bridge, but nothing about the executions.
In this country they sane wash an insane President. If any other president had talked to children on Christmas eve the way this one did. It would have prompted an outrage. Nixon secretly bombed Cambodia, prompting congressional hearings. Trump bombs anywhere he likes, with or without any good reason. Just wash it out of the news. Just ignore it and it will go away. A people struggling to feed the kids and pay the rent have little time to worry about anything or anyone else.
Fox News, Newsmax! And Sinclair media own 31 ABC affiliates. Sinclair owns 185 TV stations over all from sea to shining sea. See BS was bought up by a billionaire who suppressed a negative story about Trump. Don’t blame him, they all do it. Now flash forward fifty years into the future.
There is only independent media to tell you the truth of what is going on. Groups and individuals like me and then there is Faux independent media. Corporate media dressed down to look like independent media. Who place ads in other media asking for subscribers like corporate media. Which is why I make a conscious effort to not be like them. This Carbon-Based Life is free to read and always will be. At one time, years ago. I aspired to be like them. I envied their wealth and prestige. But the more I learned and saw, the more I discovered that was the last thing I would want to do. I saw them sell out and knuckle under to keep their positions.
I’m not here to make money or get rich. I do this because it’s the one decent thing left that I could do. Tell the truth. And call them out. You see, in 2008, the system crushed me flat. It took everything I had earned in a lifetime, and left me homeless and on the street with six dollars in my pocket. It changed me radically. I decided I would use this craft to tell the stories of all the people like myself crushed and denied by the system. It has made me unemployable.
I have no money to speak of and I sold my car to continue. Because this is all I am now. One person living in the past and lost in the future. A one-man army and this is post 336 of this year. I don’t ask for money to get ahead, but only to get along. Only to continue on till the end. There are a thousand good causes out there and if you can’t help financially, I understand. But if you can’t help financially could please spread the word and share. Because once independent media is gone, it’s gone forever.
