I was recently on Facecrook on a Bernie Sanders page. And someone (no names please) was advocating for “Voting your conscience.” Generally, I couldn’t agree more. However, these are troubled times, the sunshine patriot and all that. These are the times to strike a unified chord against Fascism or tomorrow there will be no music. I responded that any vote for anyone who is not the Democratic nominee is a vote for Donald Trump. They answered, “But Bernie Sanders can’t beat Trump.”
It’s too serious to laugh but it makes you want to laugh. This is the old media razzmatazz asking a question with dower and serious intonations, is Joe Biden too old? Is Bernie Sanders too Liberal? Can a woman win the White House? Can a Black man be elected President of the United States? Spoiler alert! It is up to us to decide who and what is important in this election. During Harry Truman’s 1948 campaign the Republican, Thomas Dewy was so far out ahead the media stopped polling. It seemed pointless and the media began to prognosticate who might be in Dewey’s cabinet.
Dewey himself began to speak of when I’m elected rather than if I’m elected. Truman took to the rails in his famous Whistle stop campaign. This is where he got the tag line “Give em hell Harry” to which Truman answered, “I never gave them hell, I just tell the truth and they think it’s hell!” Truman gave hundreds of speeches from the back of that rail car and the media said he was done but, the crowds coming to see him on the back of that train keep growing. There was a photo in Life Magazine; Dewey’s train was parked at Union Station in New York. Photographers were snapping photos of Dewey in his rail car and Dewey reached over and pulled down the shade.
The famous photo of Truman holding the Chicago Tribune “Dewey Defeats Truman” as the headline. You know who wasn’t surprised by the outcome…Harry Truman. There was a radio broadcaster H.V. Kaltenborn who Truman famously roasted, imitating him on election night. “While the President is still ahead by over a million votes in the popular vote, we have yet to hear from the country vote. And we are very sure that when the country vote comes in Mr. Truman will be defeated by an overwhelming majority.”
Does Shawn Hannity have insight? Is Rush Limbaugh clairvoyant? Broadcast journalism is for the most part Hollywood for stupid people. Are you a bloated gas bag? Can you ramble on about nothing in particular? The late Tim Russert famously said, “Principles are for paupers.” Hunter Thompson put it more succinctly,
“The press is a gang of cruel faggots. Journalism is not a profession or a trade. It is a cheap catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits—a false doorway to the backside of life, a filthy piss-ridden little hole nailed off by the building inspector, but just deep enough for a wino to curl up from the sidewalk and masturbate like a chimp in a zoo-cage.”
The false impression of impartiality with a hundred quiet slights. Is Bernie Sanders too liberal? Is Joe Biden too old? Why don’t they ask, is Donald Trump too old or is he too insane to be President? It gives the impression that Donald Trump is somehow ten feet tall with superpowers.
In 2016, the Democratic Party put up the worse candidate since Michael Dukakis and she still beat Trump by three million votes. Trump won states by a few thousand votes as the unknown quantity. Ask yourself, is Trump more popular now than in 2016? The millions who voted for Trump because they didn’t like Hillary Clinton, have they learned a thing or two in three years? I’m no expert on math but the President’s popularity has rarely touched the bottom side of forty percent. Can sixty percent defeat forty percent? If we institute a policy of no shirt, no shoes, no service at polling places or no tractor parking allowed millions of Trump voters will be disenfranchised.
The real supporters of Donald Trump aren’t the toothless disease-ridden idiots they are the dirty underside of American life. They buy airtime on the networks and triple the cost of prescription drugs. They move the factories out of the country and claim they can’t compete. They need tax cuts and rebates and incentives holding a gun to governments head or else. They can’t defend Donald Trump and they don’t try, but they don’t want this crooked little con game to end either. A rising stock price means a big bonus for the CEO and Bubba we’re talking tens of millions of dollars.
It’s not that they aren’t patriotic though they probably aren’t, but it is a Capitalist conundrum. On the one hand if the stock price falls, they get shown the door with lovely parting gifts. But if they kiss ass and make deals with the devil the people who hired them smile brightly, they can say they were just trying to do their job… like the guards at Auschwitz.
John Steinbeck said, “The quality of owning freezes you forever in “I,” and cuts you off forever from the “we.”
Money separates you from humanity and the gods won’t get no cut of it. A record turn out in the New Hampshire and a near record in Iowa. Hillary Clinton campaigned on “Hi, I’m Hillary Clinton vote for me!” Bernie Sanders campaigns on, “Hi, I’m Bernie Sanders, vote for me and I’ll change things.” Farm bankruptcies at record highs, a healthcare crisis, stagnant wages and a President of the United States that should scare the shit out of you.
We are not alone we are divided, bamboozled into believing Donald Trump is Lex Luther and Superman’s out of town. Donald Trump is a bully and bullies are famously cowards and if we stand up to him, he will slink back into the swamp that gave birth to him. Take Harry Truman’s advice don’t listen to the pollsters and prognosticators whose paycheck is dependent on the devil’s largess. Watch the crowds.
