Dirty Words

Falling through the universe at the speed of life

By David Glenn Cox

We live in our little American world with our little American values and we sit on a mountain of prosperity preaching to the poor about climbing boots. This is the nation that opened fired on civilian neighborhoods of Beirut with a battleship in response to a terrorist attack. This is a nation which shot down a civilian airliner then refused to apologize. This is a nation which infected African Americans with Syphilis…just to see what would happen.

But we sit in our cathedral of Capitalism anointing saints and condemning heretics. Bernie Sanders said a dirty word. He said Fidel Castro. Um, I’m gonna tell! Fidel Castro! Holy Smokes! Fidel Castro!

“There is often talk of human rights, but it is also necessary to talk of the rights of humanity. Why should some people walk barefoot, so that others can travel in luxurious cars? Why should some live for thirty-five years, so that others can live for seventy years? Why should some be miserably poor, so that others can be hugely rich? I speak on behalf of the children in the world who do not have a piece of bread. I speak on the behalf of the sick who have no medicine, of those whose rights to life and human dignity have been denied.”
― Fidel Castro

When Batista fled Cuba in 1959, he left with one hundred and fifty million dollars which did not belong to him. He looted the treasury and vamoosed. Did Batista care about the hungry children left behind? Did he care about a wrecked economy run primarily by Mafia bosses and fortune 500 executives? Cuba was America’s playground a giant casino and whorehouse. Cuban literacy was low and Cuban life expectancy was one of the lowest in Latin America.

Fidel Castro ran for the National Assembly and would have won his seat if Batista hadn’t stopped the elections.  Fidel Castro is a hero in Cuba the same way George Washington is a hero in this country. The number of prisoners in Cuban jails remained at the same level as it was under Batista it’s just a question of who was going to jail. When Castro began seizing plantations from the wealthy do you know whose plantation, he seized first…his mothers.

As Bernie said, Castro started literacy programs and now, Cuba is the most literate country in the Caribbean. Cuba also turns out more doctors than any country in Latin America and what’s more Cuban hospitals are free. What country could stand against the most powerful military giant in the world for fifty years? Cuba endured fifty years of US terrorism, burning crops and bombing airliners. Why can’t we have normal relations with Cuba? We have relations with Vietnam and China they’re both authoritarian Communist countries, so why not Cuba?

The answer is simple. Cuba will not allow American businesses to exploit Cuban workers. Say the word and Cuba could become just another third world assembly point snapping lids on Mr. Coffee’s for twenty-nine cents an hour. Huge resorts with luxurious swimming pools with servants to wait on you hand and foot. Do you see? Do you see why they can’t do it?

Wise man lookin’ in a blade of grass
Young man lookin’ in the shadows that pass
Poor man lookin’ through painted glass
For dignity – Bob Dylan

Is it so hard to understand why a country which has struggled to free itself from foreign domination would resist becoming subservient? So, Fidel is a raging Communist. Trump is a raging Fascist! Fidel ruled over a small Latin American nation the US rules over Puerto Rico, a small Latin American nation. Is our record so good that we dare to point fingers? The Trump administration treats Puerto Rico as a burden and a bother. These are American citizens and Trump treats them as peasants. Would Fidel treat them as peasants?

“The solutions put forth by imperialism are the quintessence of simplicity…When they speak of the problems of population and birth, they are in no way moved by concepts related to the interests of the family or of society…Just when science and technology are making incredible advances in all fields, they resort to technology to suppress revolutions and ask the help of science to prevent population growth. In short, the peoples are not to make revolutions, and women are not to give birth. This sums up the philosophy of imperialism.”
― Fidel Castro

These dirty words are verboten! You must not read them or speak them! Big Brother has decreed it so. You must not say these things aloud someone might hear you and understand. This will not be allowed. Castro Bad! Just because he liberated his country from a corrupt oppressive foreign dominated government is no reason to admire him. He’s a communist, but he’s a bad bad Communist he hadn’t learned the error of his ways and let us back in to the country to exploit the Cuban people.

“Today you cannot talk about a United Nations system… what actually exists is a domination system over nearly all countries in the world by a small group of powers under the aegis of the United States, determining all issues.”
― Fidel Castro
