The New ICE Age

By David Glenn Cox

Mother always used to say, “If you keep playing with it like that, you’re going to break it.” Apparently, Mother Trump never advised young Donald of that practice. The one attribute the United States has always had was stability. You could invest in this country and know that your money was safe from some crazy dictator taking over and prostituting all the rules. (See: Abandoned battery factory in Georgia)

The Koreans aren’t coming back, and so the 4-billion-dollar investment stands as a monument to Trumpian stupidity. But it’s not just batteries. It’s everything. Why invest in the US now? When on the  whim of a crazy old man, the economics of an investment can change overnight, suddenly making a good investment a bad investment. The rules of business are simple. If you make it easy to do business, they will come. If you make it troublesome to do business, they will leave.

Mr. Trump’s irascibility was strike one. Mr. Trump’s tariffs was strike two, and Mr. Trump’s deranged and delusional threats are strike three. Mr. Trump’s military adventurism in Venezuela is a big red flashing neon sign for investment around the globe, saying, NO, NO, NO, STAY AWAY! Mr. Trump’s ICE Gestapo tactics have overseas travelers too afraid to visit the US. Mr. Trump promised to build a wall, and now he has. Travelers fear they could be thrown into a concentration camp without a phone call or a lawyer. And that fear has thousands of FIFA World Cup ticket holders returning their tickets. It is no longer safe to visit here. You could get dragged from your car and whisked off to oblivion or shot. Not exactly your dream vacation, and the Olympics are coming!

Mr. Trump’s incessant Greenland prattle has wrangled NATO and our European allies. They are through playing games and through with trying to please and placate Donald Trump. Trump’s talk of invasion at first provoked conversations. Then, when they discovered he was serious, provoked action. The Germans and the UK sent troops to Greenland as a show of solidarity. Mr. Trump’s response was to threaten more tariffs and sharpen his rhetoric even further. If there were a real issue with Greenland that would be one thing. But there isn’t a real issue. Greenland is willing to accommodate any American desire, except sovereignty.

No man is an island. No successful country gives the world the finger. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is travelling the world lining up new customers for Canadian products. He’s made trade deals with China and now Qatar. In your face, United States! Canada recently eschewed 7 billion dollars in F35 fighter jets, preferring Swedish Gripen fighter jets. Because the United States under Donald Trump is unstable and untrustworthy. One wrong word and Trump could shut off the spare parts pipeline. Our loss is Canada’s gain. Given the current environment, which is safer for investment? Canada or the United States? Canada is upgrading port facilities in Manitoba to handle the freight that used to pass through the United States. What do we care? It’s only jobs and billions of dollars.

When Mr. Trump blows a gasket and threatens ExxonMobil because they didn’t fall in love with his Venezuela project idea. It sends a message to the entire business world. NO, NO, NO, STAY AWAY! In Central and Latin America, there is anger and fear. In South America, there is anger and fear. Mr. Trump has threatened both Mexico and Canada. In Europe, there is anger and fear. In Asia, anger and fear. There is a Canadian boycott of American products. Mexico is America’s back door for imports, and Mr. Trump’s tariffs have hit the Mexican government in their wallet, right where they live. And now, Europe. Gee, is it me? Or does this planet appear to be getting smaller, all of a sudden?

The world once needed the United States to supply diplomacy, stability, and detente. But the world really doesn’t need a United States with a crazy man at the helm threatening the world order with a sharp stick. Recently, as China was threatening Taiwan with unannounced war games, the Trump administration said…They said nothing! And the message was received in both Taipei and Beijing. Only afterward did the administration offer, “Oh yeah, right. Don’t do that!” The administration was too busy with Venezuela to worry about Asia. Walk and chew gum at the same time? Are you kidding? An administration full of sycophants is too busy trying to please and pleasure the boss to adequately do its job.

Farm commodity prices continue to fall exclusively because of Mr. Trump’s tariffs. South American soybeans are now cheaper than American soybeans. One in three American scientists say they would like to or are willing to move overseas for a job. American universities are unsafe for employment. Their funding could be cut on a whim because some billionaire car guy thinks it’s woke. Or some former junkie living under a bridge may think it’s not healthy. Bye -bye, technological advantage.

It is difficult to see how we can escape this era without a worldwide recession or depression. The Federal Reserve held an auction for ten-year Treasury notes and had ZERO foreign buyers. China and Japan are selling off trillions in US Treasury bonds and won’t be coming back. Like a broken window in winter, it only takes a second to break, but the cold lasts the whole winter through.

Why would you ever want to invest in the United States? Citizens gunned down in the streets with gun-toting soldiers out prowling around. ICE Gestapo agents masked up, terrorizing communities. The President is trying to chloroform independent reporting agencies. The President is using the Justice Department as his personal vengeance weapon. The President is trying to fire the head of the Federal Reserve so that he could take over the country’s money supply personally!

It’s hard to see how we can escape this disaster with a Congress too cowardly to act. They will allow the orange madman to destroy the whole world because they fear they might lose the next election. They will watch from the sidelines as Nero burns Rome to the ground. Boy, that old Joe Biden sure was boring. God, how I miss boring.

It’s really just a matter of time before the war comes. Before the idiot in chief goes too far and breaks something permanently. War always brings about economic collapse, just as economic collapse always brings about war.

“Hitler’s dictatorship was the first of an industrial estate in this age of modern technology, a dictatorship which employed to perfection the instruments of technology to dominate his own people. By means of such instruments of technology, eighty million people could be made subject to the will of one individual. Telephone, teletype, radio (television) made it possible to transmit commands of the highest levels directly to the lowest organs where they were executed uncritically.” – Albert Speer

    Is there no education in the West?
    Can you not go home and put up your weary feet, since this stuff writes itself. What to do though?
    Answer;
    We all bury our heads in the sand, we turn away, and we deserve what we get.
    I’m sorry.
