The Calm Before the Storm

By David Glenn Cox

‘Twas the night before election day and all through the house… The campaigns have spent all their money and sold all of their TV platforms, and now there’s nothing left to do but wait. Of course, Mr. Trump still has those two hanging campaign rallies to do. We shall see how well those adventures go. It’s sort of like finishing with a whimper. The resident wasn’t happy about doing a 180 on his decision to cancel.  So it’s a closing night show, filled with all of the enthusiasm of a closing night show.

“Hi everybody! I’m glad you got a chance to see me! You should really vote for what’s his name here. Yeah, it’s been great! We gotta go now! Goodnight, folks! Drive safe and God bless!” It’s like the last night at work for a lot of employees. Clean up detail, and turning in keys and such. “We’ll stay in touch.” But you won’t. It’s all over. It has passed on now from an is to a was.

And for Donald McFelon, most likely as not, the last who ra. The twilight moment of the aging star in the pale spotlight of their last campaign. In two years, he won’t be able to stand, let alone campaign, and they’ll have to roll him on stage on a gurney with oxygen. “Hi, agh, snort. (Burp), agh, Ha, ha, and then I said. Ha, ha, pap. I’m greet.” [Audience on tape cheers]So this is the last trip around the trash can for old, orange uncle Oscar the grouch. A changing of the guard is at hand. One day closer to his retirement in Dubai. Far beyond the reach of law enforcement. Ruling over his vast empire, capitalism works, everybody! The poor dumb son of a racist millionaire who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps and his father’s vast fortune to the presidency! “Come listen to the story bout Grandpa Fred. A poor millionaire barely kept his family fed.”

A time of flux, Queue, the spotlight on JD Vance, and all the little Vancettes, and all the ships at sea, everybody!. [This is your big, big, Chance] Don’t blow it now, JD! Don’t let the strongest political headwinds since the days of Herbert Hoover stop you. You’re  Herbert Hoover’s new likeness and redheaded stepchild. With only your wit and your sparkling personality to guide you. Do you see the problem here? Chances are, he ends up in the old vice president’s home with Mike Pence and Dan Quyale. Nice to meet you. How’s your golf game? Any plans on where you’ll live yet?

It’s a changing of the guard. A time we will always remember, like we remember World War Two. Just happy it’s almost over and glad to be alive. Someday maybe, we’ll all laugh about this…no, no, we won’t. It is a stain that will always be there. And being Americans in just a short time, we’ll forget and allow the media to tell us how it really was. If you live long enough, you’ll get to see your generation parroted in a miniseries on television, and then, you’ll begin to understand how history operates.

The path for an ex vice president of a very unpopular president is a harrowing one, one strewn with many rocks and pitfalls. “Many a slip between a cup and the drip.” I always say. Let destiny work its wish and do what it will. “Hi folks! Remember me? I was that vice president under that guy you really hated a lot. And I have a new vision for America!”  “NEXT!”

A void left of titanic size, Trump isn’t just the aging out of a two-disjointed term Presidency. The Republican Party is Maga and Maga is the Republican Party. How will the party of Trump function without Trump? What will Larry and Curly do without their Moe? Trump has captured the party and made it his own, and now, it all changes overnight. As lame-duck hoodedness sets in, spreading its dark tentacles and rot throughout the Republican Party.

I’ve seen the hand wringing articles, “What if the polls are all wrong?” Normal ninth inning jitters. When the public stands in line for two hours, three days before a midterm election. And it’s not even election day yet. Either all these people are there to show their love and support and undying passion for their faithless leader in a humble ceremony of blind adoration. Or they’re really pissed off about Donald Trump. It’s a turnout that has no rivals. What could it be that’s motivating them so, you ask? “Paid protestors,” sure. Why would anyone ever want to complain about living in this economic garden of Eden? The grand disconnect. “Maybe, These billionaires and rich people aren’t really our friends after all?

Whenever the turnout is heavy, the vote goes Democratic. Democrats are like “Don’t make Daddy get up and get his belt!” And then, once they’re good and pissed off enough, Daddy gets his belt. For the Republicans, a whole new world starts on Wednesday. The clock is ticking. Fifteen minutes till Dotage! Next stop, Dotage! When the team’s built around Babe Ruthless, what do they do without him? Plus, finishing on a down note of a famous political blowout certainly doesn’t help

It’s like hearing that skidding sound before the crash. It’s too late to stop it now! Standing in line for two hours lined up around a courthouse THREE DAYS before an election? Can you imagine what Tuesday will be like? A president who is physically falling apart from the stress and the hard travelin of first class splendor. Frayed nerves and frayed edges and Fraid not. Their career choices are flailing all about inside their heads. “Yes, I have two years’ experience working in the shit burger administration.” Yes. I worked in the Trump Justice Department. “Well, now you’re working for the colonel, frying chicken, part-time, Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

Donald Trump’s Wednesday is a countdown to hell. Counting the casualties and totaling up who or what survives. What will they build on? The party of Donald Trump now presents!!! What? What can they possibly present? The cult of the King has left no room in their spotlight for princes, princesses or potentates. Even if they were blonde and under forty. In the court of the crimson ME cult, there’s no one there to pass the baton to. No one except the pale rejects, silhouetted by their failures and tainted by their time in service, to a failed king.

This isn’t just an election, but the changing of an era. Bye, bye now. Don’t forget to stay in touch, ya hear? It’s the beginning of the end for Donald Trump and the Maga movement. It’s all downhill from here. And the end could come suddenly, like a Trump in the night. Rumors persist, That’s he’s had it! He’s tired and he’s done with it all. It’s just no fun anymore. It’s all actually the pretty normal conversation fodder whenever a would-be dictator fails. “Do whatever you want! I’ll be looking up Elba on the map, if you need me.”

“Religion is excellent stuff for keeping common people quiet. Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.”― Napoleon Bonaparte

Every time I see that photo of the Hindenburg crashing and burning, I think of the voice of the commentator saying, “Oh, the humanity”. By contrast, if Trump crashes and burns there will be an unprecendented global celebration.
