Passing Through the Sieve of Dimness Darkly

By David Glenn Cox

Oh, good news! Joe Biden leads in the latest polling. But pay no attention; good polling numbers make people relax and not worry. “I’ll do it tomorrow” when polling is like fishing. Maybe today you catch the limit and tomorrow nothing. It’s a small sample from a big lake, when the only poll which really matters is the election.

Some people with large wallets are being urged to switch their affiliation from Nikki Haley over to Joe Biden. The unspoken secret of disloyal Republican opposition to Donald Trump. It’s all fun games promising the Trumplodytes a “Bloodbath” and maybe it will fill the hall, but it’s bad for business. Pandemonium might keep the Monkey house happy, but it doesn’t please the billionaire class.

Remember when, in a not so long age. Back when everyone was smiling and having a good time down to the Trump rally? “Build that wall! Yeah, build that wall baby! That’s what we’re going to do and ain’t nobody gonna stop us. A Trump impersonator throwing a wrestling dummy in a sombrero to wow and over-awe the crowd. “Gee, I’ve never seen anything like that at a political rally before.”

But there was a seismic shift which quietly changed the course of the river and wiped that silly grin off their faces. Watching January 6th unfold and then seeing all those defendants go to prison. Cuts like a knife sharper than any Fox News propaganda ever could. That haunting little voice inside that says, “YOU TOO! Could lose your freedom and your house and your job.

You are a believer! But are you a fearless superspecial believer? Are you willing to risk everything you own on pointless half-measures? Now, Fox News and Republican newspeak can decry the unfairness of these prison sentences all they want. They can call them “patriots or political hostages”, but they are still sitting in a Federal prison, aren’t they? A point not lost even on the most inarticulate Republican. Stone walls do a prison make.

These things quietly impacted on the electorate and prompted millions of solo recanting’s of fidelity to Donald Trump. Not with shouts of “Yippee! I’m free! Ask me anything, I’m thinking again!” But rather quietly looking at Trump and seeing him with new eyes.

It’s not fun anymore. It’s angry and mean and not in a good way. These people wonder, can all these charges not be true? Every single one of the charges are false? Trump accepts no responsibility for nothing? It’s all everybody else. My dog ate my homework. The courts sentenced these marauders to hard time and deep down inside even the Republican audience knew, they deserved it.

Since January 6th and points north, attendance has been down. The cops put up miles of barricades and bolster security around the courthouse against waves of supporters who consistently fail to appear. Too many court cases in too many locations for the simian mind to grasp. “Not me, I’m not going downtown and getting my ass arrested.”

Trump was shiny and new the first time he ran for President and millions who were taken in are now taken out. They like Trump and many even love Trump, but they don’t want him to be President again. They are tired out and fatigued.

Inside the bowels of the secret Republican resistance movement. They plot strategy and marshal their resources. They don’t like Joe Biden, but they fear the impact of Donald Trump more. They understand that Trump has carjacked the Republican Party and has no care or concern for its survival. This is about Trump’s survival alone. The outcasts wait patiently in their mountain aire redoubt.

A Donald Trump defeated is a Donald Trump destroyed. Donald Trump is term limited this time around by his parents, Mother Nature, and Father Time. It’s all or nothing this time! Trump wins or dies on this election. Trump won’t be a lame duck but a dead one.

He’s not new anymore, and it’s not fun anymore. “Then the judge said, and then I said. Then the judge said, and then I said!” Yawn! As all around, Trump people are charged with crimes and convicted. As they write their Kiss and tell books for their non-reading audience.

Passing through the sieve of dimness darkly. Only the finest grain remains loyal and there are millions of them. Trump remains wildly popular with Republicans. But more aptly put Trump is only loudly popular. Sure, he walked right through a bunch of hacks and political nobody’s without any issues. DeSantis ignored Trump and spoke no evil of him. Ramaswamy was going to pardon Trump for everything! Whatever, the skies are the limit! Haley attacked Trump only in the last couple of weeks, hurling vicious softballs and spitballs.

Trump won the primaries easily, but he didn’t win the Republican Party decisively. Having eaten all the baby Guppies, Trump now has nothing left to talk about in the campaign except for the unfairness of the legal system and his predicament in it. “And then the judge said to me. And then, I said to the judge, yadda, yadda, yadda, yadda infinity.”

Thus far, the campaign has been about whatever outrageous statement Donald Trump has made today. Maybe even promising mass deportations or bloodbaths. Thrilling the hoosters in the hustings, while repelling the bankers and billionaires with ballpoint pens and checkbooks.

Inside out, outside in. The Republican intelligentsia see the future and will step aside while Trump burns down the Republican house. They can’t stop Trump from doing it, but they won’t support him while he does it. Donald Trump can’t win with sixty or seventy percent of the Republican vote. But Republicans can’t be convinced of any alternative, and so must learn the hard way.

And now, another thrilling episode of “As Mar-A-Lago Turns.” As Malaria Trump asks, “What are we going to do for money now?” As Donald replies, “Don’t worry! Once I get reelected president, that won’t be a problem.”

“The tragedy of modern man is not that he knows less and less about the meaning of his own life, but that it bothers him less and less.”  Václav Havel
